Thai Government Clarifies No Ban on Private Sector Festive Activities, But Urges Sensitivity in Mourning Period
Bangkok, October 25, 2025 – Ms. Traisulee Traisoranakul, Secretary-General to the Prime Minister, has refuted claims that the Cabinet, during a special meeting on October 25, 2025, chaired by Prime Minister and Interior Minister Anutin Charnvirakul, resolved to prohibit private sector festive activities for 30 days. "This is not true," she stated.
The special Cabinet meeting was convened to acknowledge a Royal Palace announcement and discuss guidelines for official mourning procedures. Ms. Traisulee clarified that no specific orders or resolutions were issued to halt any activities. Instead, Prime Minister Anutin, both in the meeting and in a public statement, called for cooperation from the public and private sectors to adjust the format of events to align with the atmosphere of mourning.
"The government understands that the entertainment, tourism, and service industries have planned activities in advance. We ask for discretion in adjusting their formats to be appropriate and respectful, in honor of Her Majesty Queen Sirikit, the Queen Mother," Ms. Traisulee said.
She stated that the Prime Minister underscored the importance of expressing grief through a collective sense of love, respect, and unity among Thais. The government has no intention of restricting economic or social freedoms of the private sector, as its aim is for all Thais to mourn with sincerity.
"The government invites all Thais to join in prayer and express their grief for Her Majesty Queen Sirikit, the Queen Mother, praying that her soul resides in heaven and continues to bless and protect the Thai people under her benevolence forever," Ms. Traisulee added.
Private sector activities may continue, with the government only requesting that the public and businesses consider adapting events to reflect the solemnity of the mourning period, without any specific bans or restrictions.
